Birth of the Telegraph

On this day in 1838, Morse demonstrated his telegraph machine, revolutionizing communication worldwide. Of course, the telegraph didn’t reach Nevada until 1861. Sometime later in the century, Jim Richards used this telegraph key to operate the telegraph line right here in Fallon!

A brass telegraph key in a dark brown case with a good amount of dust on it. A slip of paper below the key reads, "This telegraph key, one of the first used on lines through Fallon. Operated by Jim Richards. Donated by Kate Hicks Frazier."
