The Emancipation Proclamation

160 years ago today, President Lincoln announced that within 100 days enslaved people in rebelling areas would be free. True to his word, he signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. (Of course, authorities in the Confederacy did not honor this Proclamation, but it shifted the focus of the Civil War to address slavery).
