It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we have a long history of AAPI folks living in Churchill County. In fact, Chinese immigrants made up about 10% of the non-native population in the 1870s. These individuals were exclusively men and came to America to work as laborers, though many also found success as cooks. In 1905, Mary Freeman photographed this man, who was one of many Chinese private chefs employed by ranching families.
