With Memorial Day over and summer unofficially beginning, you may be thinking about heading up to the beaches at Lake Tahoe, like other Fallonites have done for over a century now. But did you know that “Tahoe” is derived from the Washo word da’aw meaning “lake”? This is one of many places and things where English speakers have borrowed a word in another language and stuck our own word on the back (chai tea and naan bread are other examples).
Regardless, even if you’re not visiting Lake Tahoe this summer, we hope you enjoy this lovely picture of Skyline Beach, Lake Tahoe, ca. 1950s.
