Churchill Creamery Company

Nevada financier George Wingfield became one of the state’s earliest dairy enthusiasts. He went into business with Lahontan Valley ranchers who used the name Churchill Creamery Company. By 1911, the company had two creameries operating. In 1913 Churchill Creamery absorbed the Fallon Creamery Cooperative. Their new creamery was located on North Maine Street, and the building still exists on the west side of the street just north of Kent’s Supply. The creamery was equipped to produce up to 10,000 pounds of butter each day, far more than the local farmers could ever supply.

Blue Ribbon Bread/Fallon Bakery Label
Bread Label

These “Blue Ribbon” bread wrappers were a trademark for the loaves of bread marketed by M.B. Johnson from 1924 to 1933.

Johnson first operated his bakery out of a building located across from today’s Custom Office Supply. After the building burned in 1925, he bought another property on Maine Street and built a brick building for his bakery.

Johnson sold the business in 1933 and it continued to operate until 1957 when small bakeries became impractical due to the competition from large chain stores.
