Churchill County Museum & Archives

(for a 5-quart ice cream maker)

3 quarts whole milk
2-1/2 cups sugar
3/4 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons vanilla

Place chilled mix in can of ice cream maker. Place can in tub of ice cream maker. Put three inches of crushed ice in bottom of tub, then sprinkle 1/2 cup of rock salt over the ice. Repeat the ice salt layer until the tub is full. When the tub is at the full-line, add one (1) cup of cold water. Add ice and salt as needed during the cranking process. Using as many kids as are available, crank the ice cream maker handle until an adult male (or really strong woman) has trouble turning the crank. Remove the can of ice cream, dish up to those who did the cranking, and enjoy!
